METALLICENE HYBRID ADHESIVES
A metallocene is a compound typically consisting of two cyclopentadienyl anions (Cp, which is C5H5-) bound to a metal center (M) in the oxidation state II, with the resulting general formula (C5H5)2M. Closely related to the metallocenes are the metallocene derivatives, e.g. titanocene dichloride, vanadocene dichloride. Certain metallocenes and their derivatives exhibit catalytic properties, although metallocenes are rarely used industrially. Cationic group 4 metallocene derivatives related to [Cp2ZrCH3]+ catalyze olefin polymerization. Metallocenes are a subset of a broader class of organometallic compounds called sandwich compounds. In the structure shown at right, the two pentagons are the cyclopentadienyl anions with circles inside them indicating they are aromatically stabilized. Here they are shown in a staggered conformation. Metallocene adhesives, introduced in the early 1990s offered improved performance, less density and reduced adhesive use, but at a higher cost. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjVmplx9FEc
Our Duramelt adhesives are superior adhesives for use in:
- Carton Sealing

Metallocene Based Hot Melt Adhesives for Case and Carton Sealing Applications: In 2007, the packaging industry will use in excess of 400 MM pounds of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), which roughly corresponds to more than one billion pounds of hot melt adhesive (HMA).1 EVA-based HMAs have been the workhorse of packaging adhesives for the past 40 years. Despite their shortcomings, they served the market well during these years. However, the introduction of metallocene polymers in the late-1990s led to the launch of a new family of HMAs, which quickly proved to be superior to EVA-based HMAs. Those who believed that the issues associated with the use of EVA-based HMAs were just the nature of the business quickly came to the realization that this was not the case. However, a relatively recent innovation in polyolefin catalyst technology — metallocene catalysts — represents a breakthrough that permits formulation of HMAs designed to provide specific performance attributes that elevate application productivity and economy in packaging and industrial applications. Hot-melt adhesives based on metallocene polyolefin copolymers, such as AFFINITY™ GA Polyolefin Plastomers, or “POPs,” available from The Dow Chemical Co., have demonstrated significant advantages over traditional EVA-based HMAs. These new-generation HMAs provide end users with improvements in processability, performance, cosmetic appearance and total cost. Read more of this article...
Natta and metallocene hybrid catalysts were impregnated on a bisupport prepared by the polymerization of colloidal phase of SiO2 using MgCl2 solution as an initiator. The prepared bisupport was modified by treatment with alkyl aluminum compounds. In terms of the treatment of the prepared bisupport, trimethylaluminum (TMA) was superior to methylaluminoxane (MAO) with respect to the stability of the metallocene catalyst. The prepared hybrid catalysts exhibited characteristics of both Ziegler–Natta and metallocene catalysts. The polyethylene produced on the hybrid catalysts showed a bimodal molecular weight distribution in GPC profile and two different melting points in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermogram.
